Discussion > conceptualizing same sex attraction
No, LGBT relationships, etc. are NOT addictions. Homosexuality is not an illness. It seems you need more info with regard to counseling people who may or may not be lesbian or gay.
I had not responded to the initial post here, but I entirely agree with the recent post by Ms. Shiavone.
Lance Dodes, M.D.
I'm struck by the force of Ms. Schiavone's terse replies. My problem with them is that they are offered with no supporting evidence. In spite of currently accepted and standardized views, there is research data available that suggests the opposite of her (and Dr. Dodes') opinion in this area. We could have a rousing and helpful discussion about all this if we could dispense with the quick dismissals.
Mr. Sears, I sincerely hope that you are not providing therapy or other mental health services to members of the LGBT community. As you surely know, bigotry has no place in work with patients--except as a potentially insurmountable countertransferential obstacle.
I am just finishing The Heart of Addiction which I find really empowering as a counselor trainee. I was wondering if clients who are struggling with same sex attraction could be conceptualized by the Heart of Addiction model?
